The Annual Gerald Greenwood Scholarship

The Rev. Canon Gerald Greenwood was Director of Education for the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education from 1984 to 1997. Amongst his significant contributions to the education of young people was his sponsorship of and commitment to Bacon's College; his vision and energy helped found the College which opened in September 1991. This annual award is open for application by current Year 12 students to fund a particular project for the summer holiday period between Year 12 & 13.

The aim of the scholarship is to encourage enterprise and achievement and is likely to be linked to the student’s key interests and personal ambitions, career or academic. For example, the award may fund travel, research or community activity. A bursary of up to £1000 is awarded to support the student's in achieving their objective.

Students over the past two years have been awarded scholarships to experience medical care in Swaziland, to take part in a specialist Summer Course at St Martin’s College of Art and to compile a portfolio of architectural photographs in Paris. These experiences have been invaluable in compiling their personal statements for university or employment.

Recipients of the Gerald Greenwood Award 2010/2011 are:

Ned Frost
“As I am aspiring to be a medic, I will be going to Swaziland in August this year to experience the different educational and health care systems there. I will be helping out in a primary school and re-establishing friendships and links made between Bacon’s and Swaziland through our annual appeal and the Swaziland choir visit at the end of 2010. The staff of the Swaziland Charitable Trust will be hosting and supporting me ”

Sean Lawless
“With the money awarded through the Gerald Greenwood  scholarship, I am going to  fund a three week intensive Spanish course in Madrid this summer. The money will cover the course, accommodation and flights, which I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to pay for myself. The course will be extremely helpful with A-level Spanish, and the whole experience will offer me an insight into Spanish culture and lifestyle as well as preparing me for university entrance to read Modern Languages”

“I have used the Gerald Greenwood Scholarship money to go on a groundbreaking trip in March this year to deliver cricket in deprived areas in Trinidad. I worked with young people who had dropped out of school or had fallen out with their families and were living in boarding schools taking their studies.   I went with an organisation called Cricket for Change, who have invented a game called ‘Street20’, which is a 20 ball a side game of cricket which can be played pretty much anywhere. You need very limited resources to play, all you need is a bat, ball and a set of plastic stumps.
We taught the young people how to play and also lead a game of Street20 cricket, and after a week of intensive training the young people ran their own tournament on the Friday. We also had an opportunity to go and train with the Trinidad and Tobago visually impaired cricket team and offered help on the coaching side of their session to give them some ideas about how the game was played in the UK. It was a great week which I benefited hugely from in terms of confidence, meeting new people and experiencing another country”
